Not much change, but it sure is wet

August 31, 2006 Leave a comment

Not a whole lot of change with Granny. She had a surgical procedure yesterday to suture a plastic barrier over her abdomen. Still too much edema to close the opening, but this plastic barrier is supposed to help cut down on the seepage so they’re not having to pour IV fluids into her at such a high rate. Of course this was a surgery and put her under a bit of stress, so her vitals were a little depressed last night when we saw her. It’s still a very serious situation, but after talking with Grandad last night, I kind of see his line of thinking. Her situation/condition isn’t hopeless, but the doctor did say that since it’s been a week after the initial surgery now, she should be showing visible signs of improvement, and not going up and down like a roller coaster ride. Since this is more of a roller coaster ride now, the doctor is not being all too optimistic, but is just taking it hour by hour, day by day. Please keep her and all of us in your prayers, we REALLY appreciate them, and draw strength from them.
Now this thing called Ernesto…. Back in May when I bought my bike; I intended for it to be my primary mode of transportation, pretty much year round. I guess some people call that a “hard core” rider; whatever. Well, with all this rain, I’m finding out just exactly what that means 🙂 Luckily I found a pretty decent rain suit a couple weeks back, and it’s making all the difference. The first time I rode to work in the rain, I just went it with no protection, and carried a change of clothes with me. But I neglected to bring dry underwear. Turns out I needed ’em. Now I carry a full change with me, but with the suit it’s not quite so bad. I ride with the full face helmet in the rain, because it HURTS to ride with no face protection; driving rain at 70 mph feels like a million needles in your face. No kidding, needles. I’m actually enjoying this though; getting weird looks from folks in their cars (look at the crazy man mommy), but am still able to zip around and go places you can’t in a car. I don’t think I’ll be doing the 2 wheel thing in the snow/ice, but the cold is just time for another layer or two. Anyway, Ernesto is heading more to the east of us, guess it’ll just be a soggy labor day weekend. Lawn looks like a jungle, but I’m not gonna mess with it. I’ll just get the machete out after all the rain. Hope I won’t meet any tigers. Superdawg hates the rain, spends the night on the porch, and comes inside for a bit during the day. Kids love it.
Anyway, gotta go put on my yellow suit and go brave the elements.

Until next time…..

Update on Granny, and an eye on the weather

August 30, 2006 Leave a comment

Visited Granny in the hospital last night, she’s showing some positive signs, but of course situation is still hour by hour. She’s gonna make another trip to the OR today to change her abdominal dressing and close the incision “a little bit”. Because of all the edema from the original surgery they really can’t just close it up all at once. It’s gonna be a little bit at a time over several trips. But she is now responding, opening her eyes and answering questions with winks and blinks. I managed to get Grandad stood up so that he could touch her cheek and they could actually look at each other face to face. It’s hard on him being stuck in the chair, about all he can do is hold her hand and talk to her. It’s hard on him to stand like that, but he said it was worth it.
On another note, looks like TS Ernie is gonna give us some wonderful weather this labor day. Guess we’ll cancel that giant picnic we have planned (ha ha). Not too awful concerned about anything, other than it’s gonna be a soggy weekend. I haven’t had time to cut the grass, so we may be hacking our way out to the car with a machete after all the rain. I’m glad this storm turned, ’cause it seemed headed right for Kathryn again. They don’t need that; still haven’t cleaned up from Katrina and her cousin Rita last year. Anyway, that’s what’s going on ’round here, more of the usual.

Until next time…..

Latest word on Granny

August 29, 2006 Leave a comment

Morning y’all – Taya and I went to visit last night, I talked to the doctor briefly. Granny showed some very slight improvement yesterday. Called this morning and talked to her nurse; she’s off the vesopresin (BP medicine) completely and holding her own for now. Her kidney output has also increased slightly too, so she’s shown a little bit more improvement. Of course she’s far from out of the woods yet, but every little tiny step forward is hopeful. For everyone out there praying for her, thank you; I know it’s helping. I joked the other day she has the entire eastern seaboard praying for her, and I think more and more that’s true! Keep ’em coming please. We’re all holding our own, trying not to ride the roller coaster too much, but it’s hard not to. Every little step forward can really start to get your hopes up, and then there’s the steps back that feel like you’re dropping off the edge of a hill. Kids are holding up amazingly well, I had the talk about death with them the other day when things looked so bleak. I think the twins kinda grasp it, but not sure about our little Princess. SuperDood, well he’s just too little, but he does keep asking when he can see Granny. I made a tape of them talking to her last night and brought it in for her to hear, She seemed to recognize their voices.
Anyway; that’s the latest, thank you again for everything. If anyone from our church is reading this THANK YOU SO MUCH for the pile of food last night. No more “Oh I forgot to eat” excuses 🙂
Off to the salt mines for the day

Called the nurse in the ICU this afternoon, no real momentous changes, kidney output still “better” but nominal. She is competely off the Vesopresin, but is occasionally getting norepinephrine to regulate her BP. Gonna visit this evening after work.
Thanks again for everything folks!

Latest Update on Granny

August 28, 2006 Leave a comment

Hey all. Instead of sending out the mass emails, gonna use this forum for updates, just check in here. Another stressful night, Granny had some additional surgery to install some stints on the output of her kidneys, seems to have helped the fluid buildup problem she’s been experiencing. She’s still in pretty serious condition, non-responsive, and weak vitals. Please keep her and Grandad in your prayers. He’s got some tough decisions to be making, and he really needs some guidance. We’re hanging in there (by a thread) as well as everyone else. Thanks everyone for all the thoughts and prayers so far; it’s obviously made a difference! Let’s see what another day brings.

Latest News (12:30-ish)

Talked to ICU nurse; She is doing “better”, a little improvement, is still not out of the woods. The kidney surgery didn’t fix the problem with the fluid buildup, still not enough kidney output. Her BP is still low, but not dangerously low, they are trying to wean her off vesopresin which is the medicine to control BP. To quote the nurse “We have her right where we want her for the moment”. She said don’t want to raise your hopes, but there is a glimmer of hope right now.

Until next time…..

8-26-2006 Granny Update

August 28, 2006 Leave a comment

Hey everyone – Sharryn got a call from the hospital this morning, Granny is strong enough to have the second surgery to close her abdomen, and is on her way down right now. Being that it is surgery, ‘course there is some risk; so we still appreciate the prayers. Thanks for all the prayers that have been going up the past couple days. They’ve obviously made a HUGE difference. Will send out another update soon as I know more.

Hey there – just a quickie update. This morning’s procedure was actually not a surgery, but a trip to the O.R. to change her dressings in a sterile environment. She’s pretty wiped out from it all, but seems stable. Still gonna be quite an uphill battle, thanks again for the prayers/thoughts/calls. Gonna go back for the evening visit in a bit.
Thanks y’all!

Until next time…..

8-24-2006 Prayer Request

August 28, 2006 Leave a comment

Hey all – hope you’re doing well. I know you haven’t heard much from us as of late – been a busy, busy summer; will try and do better about keeping everyone up to date. I would like to ask that you keep Taya’s “Granny” in your prayers. She took an ambulance ride to the E.R. last night because of severe abdominal pain. After ultrasounds, they discovered a ruptured aortic aneurysm near her kidneys. They were able to get her into surgery, and it has been repaired. She is in ICU recovering; but it’s still very touch and go. I’d like to ask that you keep her and Taya’s “Grandad” in your prayers, as he is naturally devastated over her condition and he is not in the greatest of health either. Thank y’all very much, and I’ll be in touch!

Until next time…..
