It’s official – we’re at a level 6 panICdemic

According the all-knowing WHO, the world is infected with a dangerous “novel” virus known as the flu. Per their press release

“The virus is contagious, spreading easily from one person to another, and from one country to another. As of today, nearly 30,000 confirmed cases have been reported in 74 countries.”

Huh???? Doesn’t this happen every year with the common cold? Why on earth is the WHO sending a worldwide panic over a minor virus? The very same press release says

“the overwhelming majority of patients experience mild symptoms and make a rapid and full recovery, often in the absence of any form of medical treatment”

Honestly, I see 2 outcomes from this panic pandemic declaration.
1) People will freak out over it, start buying up Tamiflu, and other flu “remedies”, hole themselves up, and then feel foolish when it’s over.
2) The WHO will look like a bunch of idiots for declaring a pandemic over a flu virus, and when a real threat occurs, nobody will take them seriously.

Guess maybe yesterday morning would have been the time to invest in Roche Laboratory stock, eh? You know someone’s gonna make a bunch of money off of this.

Update – I think I know *who* is gonna make that money. From our friends over at the Wall Street Journal “Pharmaceutical company Novartis AG Friday released positive data on a vaccine for swine flu, a day after the World Health Organization declared the first influenza pandemic in more than 40 years. Novartis said it had produced its first batch of the vaccine for influenza AH1N1, the strain that triggered the WHO alert. The company said the vaccine was manufactured weeks ahead of expectations using cell-based technology, allowing for production without the need to adapt the virus strain to grow in eggs. It plans to start clinical trials in July and expects to get a license in the fall of 2009.”

Geez, come on people! At least wait a couple weeks after the panICdemic alert to announce that “You have the cure”. DUH – Marketing 101…..

I’m not really sure what “cell-based technology” is either, cloning(?) Dunno. Doesn’t sound like something that me or my family needs to be experimented on with though.

Until next time…..
