First harvest of honey

It’s not much, but it’s GOOD. We harvested our honey today for the first time since we got the hive. We just simply cut the comb out of the frames and crammed it into a couple of jars. After sampling quite a bit of course. Now we have a little of our very own honey to enjoy this winter. We’ve been buying honey from a local apiary, it’s good too; but I’d rather raise my own – I know how it’s processed, and it costs less too.

It was kinda neat watching the bees “clean up” after we harvested the honey. They came and “robbed” the little drips that were left afterward.

Until next time…..

of fresh made apple cider. Our trusty Jack Lalane juicer plowed thru 10 bushels of apples today and we made 50 gallons of cider. 5 to drink, and 45 for cider vinegar; hopefully enough to last us a year. So, that makes 20 bushels we’ve gone thru in the past week. We’re getting a little apple’d out, but we’ll be very grateful over the year to have the different apple creations we’ve been able to preserve.

Until next time…..

It’s that time of year again for putting up apples. That time where the old-fashion family economy is put to good use. A family economy is when the whole family works together to provide for the needs of the family. Growing food, harvesting, and preserving it is a one of the most important parts of the old-fashion family economy. Lots of old skills and seasonal traditions are part of the old-fashion family economy. Just like when we canned peaches; everyone has a job, everyone helps, and everyone benefits.

Putting up 10 bushels of apples will be kinda like that Forest Gump scene – “Apple sauce, Apple slices, Apple pie filing, dried Apples……” Yum!

Until next time…..
