Apples 2013

All the apples are finally put up for the year. We put up almost 17 bushels of apples this year, Taya and the children doing most of the work. I juiced about 5 bushels to turn into vinegar, and they made applesauce, dried apples, apple pie jam, apple pie filling, quarts and quarts of apple juice, and we ate apples with all our pork we’ve been enjoying. But we’re a bit tired of apples for the moment.
Unfortunately this year our normal apple orchard (http://windyhillorchards.com/) had a bad year, so we couldn’t do our normal routine of picking up the dropped apples in their orchard; as they were all rotten. But Mr. Noonkester pointed us to a commercial orchard up the street from him where we got a good deal on their cull apples; which suit us just fine. Now we can sit back for a bit an enjoy the “fruits” of all the labor.
Hopefully the trees we planted a few years ago will bear us a good crop next year, so we won’t have to buy as many apples.

Until next time…..
