8 little piggies…….

November 19, 2014 4 comments

Turns out I either couldn’t see them all in the dark, or momma pig was not done having babies when I went out to check on them in the dark the other night.  We have 8 healthy little piglets, not just 6.

I like it when the head count goes up like that.  In fact Pa Mac had some great advice for me “Keep goin’ out there. You might can edge it on up to a dozen by nightfall.”  Unfortunately it didn’t work, but it is nice to have all those healthy little piglets.  It’s better than “money in the bank”, because you can’t eat money.

One of the little ones does have an injury – you can even see it in the photo.  It looks like she got caught between momma and the side of their little house.  Some of it’s hide got scraped off, and there’s a pretty good gash on the ham.  We’re keeping an eye on it, and it seems to be doing fine.  Doesn’t slow her down at all.  Even with this frigid cold we’re having (15 degrees at 5AM today), they’re all doing just great.  My stepdad suggested that we wrap their house in plastic to cut down on any drafts, so it’s quite toasty in there for them in their nest of hay.

Hope everyone out there is weathering the cold as well as our piggies.

Until next time…..

3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days…… and 3 degrees

Was talking with the farmer we buy milk from the other day.  I mentioned that our pig was about to farrow, and we were expecting a pretty sharp temperature drop.  He said his dad always told him pigs had a gestation period of 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days, at 3 am.  I laughed, as this seems to be the way with all livestock.  It turns out the saying has another part – 3 degrees.  (Well, it may not be quite that cold, but it got down to 16 this morning, so I’ll claim 3 degrees)  I had to work an overnight shift last night, so I didn’t get a chance to check the pig until this evening after dark.  We have 6 healthy looking little piggies nestled up all snug with their mama.  Will check on them in the daylight tomorrow, and hopefully get some pictures.  Hopefully everyone is surviving this cold weather.  Supposed to get down around 20 tonite.  BRRRR.  Throw another log in the stove, and add another blanket on the bed!

Until next time……..
