making firewood from lemons…..

Well, we’re not making lemonade, that’s for sure.  Saturday night we had some huge windy gusts, weather people said it was near 50 mph.  All I know is it was very windy.  We had a huge pine tree come down back in the woods behind the chicken coop; it took 2 other pines with it.  The third pine tore down a section of the wire fence, but it wasn’t a big deal.  Daisy donkey is very well-mannered, and just ignored the broken fence.

We also had a dead poplar tree snap off about 35 feet up from the wind, and bounced down on the roof before hitting the ground.  Luckily no major damage, although the base of the outdoor pizza oven is gonna need some work.  One course of block on one side got knocked off, and one of the blocks got obliterated.  Glad we hadn’t built the oven yet, I think it would have gotten destroyed.

Happily though, since it was dead wood, and quite dry, we simply cut down the rest of the tree, split it, and stacked it up on the porch.  It’s burning nicely in the stove now.  It’s great having a family our size, we managed to get it all taken care of in less than 2 hours.  I ran the chainsaw, Austin did the splitting.  Little Matt and Hannah loaded the wheelbarrow, and Ian stacked it on the porch.  We now have a nice addition to our wood stock, just outside the door, ready for a week of 20 something degree weather.

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.  Or firewood in this case.

Until next time…..
